The activity includes the transfers and you will be collected from your hotel, between 6am - 6.30am for the morning ride, and 2.45pm and 3.15pm for the afternoon. You will then travel 15km out of town into the African bush to the game reserve - it is a bumpy ride, and you will generally spot some game along the way: wild elephant, buck, warthog, birds etc. For winter months blankets are provided for extra warmth. Arriving at the boma you will be warmly greeted, and for morning rides sit around a hearty bush tv (fire) whislt you enjoy a tea/coffee/hot chocolate. Afternoon rides have no need of fires, but similar hospitality awaits.
Your guides will give you a full briefing on the ride and what to expect of the activity. They will also provide a history of the elephants - all of whom were rescued as orphans from drought, and provide details of their welfare. One of the priorities of the elephant programme is to recruit ambassadors for elephant welfare and protection, and our education programme helps to address conflicts between locals and elephants. All of our elephants spend long periods of each day roaming free in the bush - returning of their own volition to stables at night. Following any questions and ablutions, you will then proceed to mount your elephants. Each Elephant normally takes 2 passengers and 1 induna (trainer) - our largest Elephant is Tusker and smallest is Deka. We always endeavour to keep friends and families paired together.
Once ''on board'' your 45 minute ride in the bush begins. We can never guarantee what other animals you may see on your journey: for some it has been lion kills, for others only warthogs - that is the nature of safari. We can guarantee though that the thrill of being on these wonderful animals, and the fantastic information provided by your induna is reward enough. Throughout the trip professional photographs and video are taken, as are photos with client cameras/phones. At the end of the safari, you have what is for most the highlight of the trip - personal interaction with your animal. Sit on its knee, feel the velvety smoothness of its ears, the coarseness of its skin, look into its huge eyes and best of all have it take treats out of your hand with its incredible trunk.
Once finished you can then sit in the shade of the Boma and enjoy either a full breakfast or afternoon snacks - and plenty to drink. Watch the video of your ride, and decide whether you would like some of the professionally taken photos/video. Of those on the afternoon ride, some may have chosen the additional game drive which provides for Rhino encounters. Those leaving then get back on the vehicle and head back to town/their hotel. From pick up to drop off is generally about 3-3.5 hours, allowing you time for a further activity, sunset cruise - or perhaps just a visit to the Shearwater cafe - where you can facebook your envious friends!
