This day trip to the famous El Yunque Rainforest is one you do not want to miss while in San Juan. El Yunque is the only tropical forest in the U.S. National Forest System, spanning 28,000 acres and reaching an elevation of 3,624 feet. The area receives over 100 billion gallons of rainfall each year, coming in very brief rainbow showers that end almost as soon as they begin.
Your guide will teach you about natural history education, medicinal and toxic plant identification, geology, ecology, pre-colombian history, Island history, flora and fauna and many other subjects like survival tips while on this hike.
Nominated as one of the Seven Natural Wonders of the world, this tropical rain forest was first set aside for protection by the Kingdom of Spain in 1876, making it one of the first natural reserves in the Western Hemisphere. Currently managed by the United States Forest Service, the Forest counts with over 28,000 contiguous acres within the Sierra de Luquillo. With peaks, escarpments, myriad streams and waterfalls, and a lush green vegetation representing various forest types, the National Forest is truly a biodiversity paradise.
During the Hiking Eco Guided Tour you will walk short trails and explore through the different zones of El Yunque rainforest. The experience begins with a visit to an observation tower. The view is a breathtaking panoramic 360 degree of the rainforest and the Atlantic Ocean with some of the Spanish and US virgin Islands. From here we start our interpretation hike. During the hike the tour continues to a set of picture perfect waterfalls that are inside the forest through a hike in a single track trail.
