The capital and largest city of Dominica, Roseau is home to lovely French Colonial architecture, particularly along King George V Street. Pass by St George’s Anglican Church and the Gothic-style catholic cathedral, and then visit the Dominica Botanic Gardens.
The Botanic Gardens boast a variety of Caribbean and international trees, flowers and other plant life — from banyan trees to orchids to African tulips — across its 40 acres (16 hectares) of land in Roseau. You can also see rare parrots in the aviary and visit the unusual memorial to Hurricane David — an old school bus that was squashed below a tree.
Next, head up to Morne Bruce, a lookout point that offers spectacular views of Roseau, the port and the coastline. Snap a few photos before continuing north to Mero Beach! The drive takes you along the west coast of the island, through fishing villages and across the Layou River.
When you arrive at the black-sand beach (most of Dominica’s beaches have black or gray sand due to the island’s volcanic origins), settle into your beach chair and umbrella (rental price included). Sip on a glass of rum punch or tropical juice, go for a swim, work on your tan — the two hours here are yours to spend however you wish.
