Discover this and much more, on a small-group Athens walking tour that will tell you that history has continuousness and is still alive as long as you know where to look for it..Greek history is inextricably linked with that of the Ottoman Empire. In ancient times Greeks and Persians competed for territory, wealth and glory. The competition between them has given world history legendary battles such as the Battle of Thermopylae and the Battle of Salamis, while the men who pioneered in these epic wars have become symbols of bravery and discernment -Themistocles, Miltiades, Leonidas.

The fall of Constantinople (Instabul) in 1453 marked the extinction of the once glorious Byzantine Empire and a long period when the Greeks lost the freedom and sovereignty of their territories. They won the liberation war of 1821 and were able to officially establish the new Greek state.

But what happened in the meantime? Athens was conquered by the Ottomans in 1458. For 400 years the Greeks and the Ottomans coexisted in a common territory, following a common path, which sometimes was marked by controversies while others with partnerships. Indeed, everyday people, Greeks and Ottomans alike, had found a way to coexist and exchange cultural elements, respecting the religion and traditions of each other. Is this coexistence still reflected in the city of Athens somehow? Are there mementos of this forgotten era?
