Coimbra, known worldwide for having one of the oldest university towns in the world, offers many possibilities to its visitors. City of the black capes, overlooking the mythical Mondego river, Coimbra hides legends of love and punishment, the tragic love story between the king D. Pedro I and the maid of the queen, D. Inês de Castro. On this full-day private tour, you will have the opportunity to learn much of the history and traditions this college town has to offer.Coimbra was the first capital of the kingdom in the time of monarchs for almost two centuries. She gained new projection with the
founding of the University, which provided the formation of the urban center full of remarkable buildings.

Your visit starts with the University of Coimbra, a World Heritage site. Visit the Royal Palace (Paço das Escolas) where you will find the Joanina Library (Biblioteca Joanina), the S. Miguel Chapel (Capela de S. Miguel), the Great Hall of Acts (Sala dos Capelos), the Medieval and Academic Prison, the Armory (Sala dos Archeiros), the Private Examination Room (Sala do Exame Priveado), and the University's Tower (Torre da Universidade).

On the university campus lies the outstanding Machado de Castro Museum. Outside the university, discover the Old Cathedral (Sé Catedral) with its historic center and medieval staircases, the Monastery of Santa Cruz, where the first two kings of Portugal are buried, Afonso Henriques and his son Sancho I. Wander down the narrow streets with your guide at a pace that works for you.

Many are the attractions of Coimbra, such as the Monastery of Santa Clara-a-Velha, founded in 1283 by a noble lady and given to the Poor Clare nuns shortly after. It was in the Palace of the Monastery that Inês de Castro lived and later, in 1355, was executed. On the left bank of the Mondego river, you will find the theme park Portugal dos Pequenitos, which is divided into three spaces according to the following themes: the first theme is regional miniature houses and typical villages across the country, the second is devoted to the most important Portuguese monuments and the last to the Portuguese Ex-colonies.

Because this is a private tour, the itinerary can be adjusted to fit your needs. Take a break for lunch (own expense) or shopping, the choice is yours. At the end of your day, you will be brought back to your hotel in Lisbon.
