Your visit starts with the University of Coimbra, a World Heritage site. Visit the Royal Palace (Paço das Escolas) where you will find the Joanina Library (Biblioteca Joanina), the S. Miguel Chapel (Capela de S. Miguel), the Great Hall of Acts (Sala dos Capelos), the Medieval and Academic Prison, the Armory (Sala dos Archeiros), the Private Examination Room (Sala do Exame Priveado), and the University's Tower (Torre da Universidade).
On the university campus lies the outstanding Machado de Castro Museum. Outside the university, discover the Old Cathedral (Sé Catedral) with its historic center and medieval staircases, the Monastery of Santa Cruz, where the first two kings of Portugal are buried, Afonso Henriques and his son Sancho I. On the left bank of the Mondego river, you will find the theme park Portugal dos Pequenitos, which is divided into three spaces according to the following themes: the first theme is regional miniature houses and typical villages across the country, the second is devoted to the most important Portuguese monuments and the last to the Portuguese Ex-colonies.
