This trek includes visits to two very important archaeological Inca sites and is also one of the last unexplored routes. Nowadays there are more people exploring it, more often for the landscapes, hot springs and the close contact with the Andean settlers.Day 1: Cusco – Playa Rosalina
Your adventure begins with a drive for four hours towards the Andean community of Cachora. Then, you'll begin a fairly flat walk to La Colmena. After arriving to La Colmena you'll hike uphill through the high pass of Capuliyoc where the pass will give you a great view of the Apurimac Canyon. You'll descend to Playa Rosalina. The day ends on the banks of the Apurimac River, the main tributary of the Amazon River.
Day 2: Playa Rosalina – Choquequirao
The morning begins hiking uphill through a long and narrow trail. In the meantime, you'll eat lunch and later arrive at Choquequirao. Here, you will enjoy some free time to explore the terraces and the Inca constructions. When the sun starts to set, there is a great opportunity to enjoy the magnificent view over the canyon, where condors often are spotted.
Day 3: Choquequirao – Maizal
You start the day ascending. Along the path, we will pass through the archaelogical site of Pinchi Unuyoj. Afterwards you descend down the mountain at Rio Blanco, where you then ascend to Maizal where you'll spend the night.
Day 4: Maizal – Yanama
On this day you will mostly hike uphill and observe along the way impressive Inca trails and Inca mines, also known as Minas Victoria. After you reach the highest peak of the day, you will descend to the campsite.
Day 5: Yanama – Colpa Pampa
After an early breakfast, you will ascend to the highest pass in the trail at 4,670 m/15,410 ft. After peaking, you will descend to the campsite at Colpa Pampa.
Day 6: Colpa Pampa – La Playa – Santa Teresa
The day begins hiking until you reach the lunch site at La Playa. After lunch you will have a fairly easy hike downhill, where you will be able to experience Ceja de Sela, the jungle highland. At this point the hiking stops for a moment and you will be transported by bus for two hours down to the village of Santa Teresa, where a nice dinner will await you. Here you spend the night in tents. In Santa Teresa you can visit the natural hot thermal springs for $4 USD.
Day 7: Santa Teresa – Aguas Calientes
You will hike uphill for three hours until you reach 2,810 m/9,273 ft. After the ascent you will have an excellent view of the lost city of the Inca’s, Machu Picchu. Then you will walk along the Urubamba River to the hydroelectric station. From there you will walk or take the train to Aguas Calientes and spend the night in a hostel.
Day 8: Machu Picchu – Cusco
After breakfast, you will take the bus to Machu Picchu. A walking tour (approximately 2 hours) is given by your guide and after this you can explore the mysterious city on your own. In the afternoon, you will take the train from Aguas Calientes back to Cusco and arrive at 9pm.
