Take a half-day excursion to this unforgettable and captivating place on a guided tour of a generations-old winery, the narrow streets of the village, and several other unique spots.
You’ll head out from San Sebastian along the old coastal route through countryside and farmhouses, and as you drive along (via private transport), your guide will explain some of the history of the region, the unique culture of the Basque Country, and little tidbits of information about rural life, villages, and, of course, the famous Basque gastronomy.
The first destination is the oldest family-run txakoli winery in the region, and you will be joined by the winemaker for a guided tour of the vineyards and winery. You’ll learn about the process of txakoli-making from start to finish and then enjoy a tasting of the current year’s offerings.
After leaving the winery, you’ll have the option to visit the museum dedicated to the work of famed fashion designer Cristobal Balenciaga, a native son of Getaria. His designs were revolutionary in his time, and they continue to be classic and relevant today. You will then head down into the village and meander along its narrow streets, visiting the church, the fishing port, and an artisan salt-cured fish workshop (you must get some to take home!).
In Getaria, lunch means grilled fish outdoors at one of its famed portside restaurants, accompanied by a cold bottle of txakoli wine. You may choose to return to San Sebastian with the guide, or remain in Getaria for lunch on your own.
