While your cruise ship is in Cadiz, make your own way to the prearranged meeting point near the port. Meet your guide and board an air-conditioned minivan for your shore excursion around this ancient city.
Enjoy a panoramic tour as your guide recounts Cadiz’ 3,000-year-old history. Founded by the Phoenicians in the 2nd century BC, the peninsula-based city is one of Europe’s oldest, an age evidenced by its Roman, Moorish and Baroque architecture.
Drive around Cadiz’ handsome New Town and stop for photos at the 17th-century Puerta da Tierra city gate. Then, take in La Caleta Beach, site of the former Phoenician port; and visit Santa Catalina castle, a 17th-century seaside fortress.
Among other sights, view the seafront gardens of the Parques Genoves and palm-shaded Alameda Apodaca promenade, and then head for the Plaza de Espana to start your walking tour. Take pictures of the square's imposing Cortes Monument commemorating Spain’s 1812 Constitution, and then delve into the Old Town's labyrinth of narrow streets and leafy plazas.
Stroll to pretty Plaza de Mina and other squares, admiring the balconied houses, orange trees and indoor Andalucian patios as your guide shares fascinating nuggets about the area's history. On route, perhaps talk to your group and guide about stopping for tapas and refreshments (own expense).
Get an insight into daily life at the Old Town's flower market and central market, and walk to the Catedral Nueva, Cadiz’ huge 18th-century Cathedral. Head inside to admire its Baroque architecture and tomb-filled crypt before taking a look around El Populo, Cadiz’ oldest quarter.
Follow the 13th-century alleys and archways to Plaza San Juan de Dios, the Old Town's charming main square, to admire the Town Hall and stately palm trees. Your shore excursion ends when you say goodbye to your guide here, and get directions back to the nearby port.
Please note: The order of sightseeing as described here may be subject to change on the day of your tour.
