Discover how a small town built on a swamp became one of the most powerful cities in the world! Enjoy your own private guide now to see all of Berlin’s main sights in one 4-hour tour encompassing all areas of the German capital’s history.
Your private expert guide will meet you at your hotel and whisk you away to Berlin’s historic city center. Kick of the day with a quick overview of Berlin’s 800-year history; from swampy beginnings, to an imperial capital, and into the dark days of the 20th Century. You’ll get to know all about Berlin, all at your own pace.
At the breathtaking Museum Island you will not only see inspiring neo-classical architecture, but learn about the Prussians’ ambitions to turn Berlin into a world city. No wonder it’s now a UNESCO World Heritage Site! From here you’ll walk the entire length of the Unter den Linden, the former royal boulevard. Along the way you’ll pass Germany’s central war memorial, the Neue Wache, as well the site of the Nazi’s first book burning at Bebelplatz, and the former Soviet Embassy.
You will then reach Berlin’s world-famous Brandenburg Gate, built as an entrance to the city for the Prussian kings; the Gate has been used to show off the power and might of many individuals: Napoleon, the German Emperors, Adolf Hitler, and even David Hasselhoff! As you walk through the Gate your guide will show you the German parliament building, the Reichstag, before taking you to the Memorial to the Murdered Jews of Europe, where you will have time to explore architect Peter Eisenmann’s provocative design.
After visiting the memorial you’ll have the option for a coffee break, before moving on to the site of Adolf Hitler’s bunker, where the dictator committed suicide just before the end of WWII. Your guide will then take you through the fallout from the Second World War, explaining how Berlin came to be occupied by the Soviets in the East, and America, Britain, and France in the West, eventually leading to the division of Germany into two separate states. You’ll get to see this division when you visit the Berlin Wall and Checkpoint Charlie, where your guide will tell you how the Wall was set up over night!
Finish your tour with a visit to Berlin’s most beautiful square, the enchanting Gendarmenmarkt. See the twin 18th Century French & German cathedrals, as well as the 19th Century neo-classical Concert House.
