A Geo tour allows one to see, touch and understand the geological structures of the landscape, where the option of caving completes the scenario.
The tour starts towards São Roque, to observe the Rosto do Cão Islet, which is an example of a surtsyan volcano. Due to the proximity of the volcanological observatory of Lagoa, a quick visit to see the permanent exhibition of rocks and minerals from the Azores is possible. From here, we go to Lagoa do Fogo by the South coast, where a Strombolian volcano is seen. We go up to Pico da Barrosa to have a look over the Peaks Complex which is an example of fissure eruption, a little bit further up we see the collapse caldera.
Going down North, we pass by the Geothermic power plant. This visit is only permitted when the power plant meet all the security conditions. We continue towards the calderas of Ribeira Grande to observe the lava flows and fumaroles, where we will take a break to have coffee. Following through Monte Escuro, we visit Lagoa do Congro, a perfect example of a Maar where there will be about a 20 minute walk and stop for lunch. The tour goes on to Villa Franca, to see the urban architecture made of ignimbrite you will experience the exclusive rock of Vila Franca and Povoação area. Going back to Ponta Delgada, there is the possibility to go either to a lava tunnel, or to Ponta da Ferraria to see a pseudo crater.
