This unique full-day tour from Paestum takes you through two of the most significant events to come out of the town: its role as the site of the Allied Landing, or 'Operation Avalanche', and its connection to Ancel keys, the inventor of the 'K-ration'. The Allied Landing was not only the start of the Italian liberation, but also a catalyst that allowed American physiologist Ancel Keys, inventor of the 'K-ration', to learn about the nutritional culture of Cilento. Keys provided the inspiration for a full examination of the Mediterranean Diet.
To commemorate this important event, the tour will alternate tasting moments with insights dedicated to the plates and the typical preparations that were consumed in the 40s. The liberators, coming from a strong economy and accustomed to a diet rich in calories, noticed a marked difference when they switched to the Cilento diet, which is rich in legumes and vegetables.
This tour begins with a visit to the Museum of the Mediterranean Diet and the Museum of the Sea of Pioppi. Pioppi, a village of 500 residents in the province of Salerno, has for forty years been been home to Ancel Keys, the father of the Mediterranean diet, also known as 'Mister Cholesterol'.
In Paestum, enjoy a lunch of traditional Cilento's feed-based mozzarella, cheese and sausage, and grilled vegetables. There is also a possibility of tourist menu-based first and second courses at a partner restaurant. On the daily tour of the Tower of the Sea, you will learn about 'Operation Avalanche', along the coast that played a fundamental role in a landing that, together with Normandy, was one of the biggest military operations of the Second World War.
