The most popular route starts from your hotel in the city centre where you will quickly get onto a bike and cycle onto the quiet streets of Sea Point with Lions Head towering above you and the chilly Atlantic Ocean on your side.Wind your way on flat roads through the upmarket seaside suburbs of Clifton and Camps Bay, home to Cape Town’s prime real estate and a selection of postcard-perfect beaches. Then make your way alongside the stunning Atlantic Seaboard, through the village of Bakoven, nestled at the foot of the famous Twelve Apostles mountain range, before your first climb of 4km at about the 15km mark.
Summit and barrel down the infamous Suikerbossie Hill that the Argus Cycle Tour riders have to slog up every year in the biggest time race in the world.
Pass a few coffee shops in Hout Bay village where you can grab a quick bit to eat or something to drink (own expense). The next climb is 5km long and takes place on one of the most stunning roads in the world- Chapmans Peak Drive.
The summit of Chapmans Peak Drive is 27.5km into the ride. For those that are happy with a 55km ride, you can take a breather, shoot some photos, pat yourself on the back and retrace the outward route back to Cape Town. For those wanting to see more and cycle further, this is the point where Cape Town really begins to shine as a cyclist’s paradise and you can be taken on a variety of different routes from here.
