When your cruise ship docks in Athens, head out on a half-day shore excursion to Cape Sounion with a private guide. After venturing along the shores of the glorious Attica peninsula, stop at its southernmost tip, Cape Sounion, to ogle the views and admire the Temple of Poseidon — a site revered by the Ancient Greeks, Lord Byron and many more. Hear of its history and learn about its architecture before returning to port. Start your private shore excursion with a pickup from Piraeus Port in Athens, and travel southward by air-conditioned minivan along the Attica coast. Your route hugs the shoreline, allowing for sweeping views over the Saronic Gulf, an area typified by rugged cliffs, sandy beaches and unassuming seaside villages.

After roughly 1.5 hours on the road, arrive at Cape Sounion, the southernmost tip of the Attica peninsula, overlooking the Aegean Sea. Perched high on a promontory is the Temple of Poseidon, a monument built by the Ancient Greeks in honor of their sea god.

With your guide, climb the hill to the temple, and admire its elegant white pillars framed by a seamless blue backdrop of sea and sky. Get close-up to the elegant Doric columns as your guide explains the temple’s rich history, and learn of the temple’s importance as a place of worship.

As you explore the immediate area on foot, step back in time by imagining the Ancient Greeks who once prayed and made sacrifices here. Also look out for a famous piece of ‘graffiti,’ etched by the poet Lord Byron in the early 19th century. The views from Cape Sounion are dramatic, too. On a clear day, the Peloponnese peninsula is visible, way across the Aegean Sea.

Perhaps buy some snacks and drinks (own expense) from the nearby cafe. Then, hop back inside your private minivan for your journey back to Piraeus Port in Athens.
