With many of the surrounding peaks of Royal Natal National Park rising high into the sky, this hike affords some of the Drakensberg’s most dramatic and accessible scenery.
The park’s crown jewel-the sublime Amphitheatre, is an 8km wall of spectacular cliffs and canyon, best viewed from both below and up on top. Here the world’s second highest and Africa’s highest fall-Tugela Falls drop 947 meters (3,100 feet) in five stages. Other notable peaks in the area are the Devil’s Tooth, the Eastern Buttress and the Sentinel. The hiking trail starts at the Sentinel car park, at an altitude of 2540m, and takes the route up the Gully, which emerges at Beacon Buttress. The reward for the steep ascent is majestic mountain scenery including the highest peak of the escarpment- Mont-aux-Sources at 3282m.
After lunch at the top of the Drakensberg plateau, at average height of 3100 m, we descent by making use of two sets of chain ladders running down over a set of sheer rocks.
