After morning pickup from your hotel, head to the town of Cuzama by minivan – an approximate 45-minute drive from Merida, the capital of Yucatán. Along the way, stop in the modern town of Acanceh to visit its Mayan archaeological ruins with your small group. Founded between 200 and 300 AD, the site of Acanceh had about 400 buildings, but just three of them have been restored and are open to the public.
See the main structure, a three-leveled step pyramid reaching 36 feet (11 meters) high. Admire several distinctive Mayan masks carved into its stone walls, whose decorative layers were uncovered by archeologists. Your guide will show you the Palace of the Stuccos, a 164-foot (50-meter) wide structure of complex design, including many rooms with detailed friezes.
After touring the site, your guide will drive you small town located near Cuzama - Eknakan, where a Gothic-style church is located. View the church, built in the 18th century, which reveals
atypical construction in the Yucatan, where most of the churches were
built in the colonial style. Then, continue on to Cuzama and its town square.
Then, visit the hacienda of a former sisal (agave) plantation and board a rail-mounted truck pulled by a horse, taking you to your final destination – three beautiful cenotes. Descend by stairs to the underground limestone caverns, each filled with refreshingly cool and crystal-clear water. Be amazed by the stalagmites and stalactites in this magnificent underwater world as you swim and dive in the cenotes!
After your adventure, your guide will return you to your Merida hotel at approximately 4:30 pm.
