Start your experience with a pickup from your central Abu Dhabi hotel. Then, relax in your air-conditioned coach and set off on your sightseeing as your guide explains how, until the 1950s, Abu Dhabi was little more than a small fishing port.
Hear how Abu Dhabi’s fortunes changed in 1958 with the discovery of oil, and how this ushered in massive investment, seeing it mushroom into today’s futuristic emirate, and carving out its state-of-the-art architecture including space-age towers and and extravagant leisure developments.
Head out of town to Masdar City, one of the emirate’s grandest-ever building projects. This incredible — and as yet unfinished — renewable-energy city is ingeniously designed to stay cooler than the surrounding desert.
See some of Masdar, and then travel to Yas Island, the artificial island just outside Abu Dhabi. Stroll around Yas and admire the extravagant Yas Viceroy Hotel on the Yas Marina F1 circuit before heading for Ferrari World, the world’s first Ferrari theme park. While your visit doesn’t allow time for rides, it offers a fascinating insight into Abu Dhabi’s latest attractions. Shop for Ferrari souvenirs if you wish, and enjoy free time for lunch (own expense).
Next, visit man-made Saadiyat Island, home to art centers and museums. Pose for photos at the dune-shaped UAE Pavilion and visit the Manarat Al Saadiyat to see scale models and a video showcasing Abu Dhabi’s future development.
Finally, return to the city and see its best-known landmark, the Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque. Admire this white-marble mosque and hear how it accommodates 40,000 worshippers, making it one of the world’s largest.
