This is not just about seeing some village churches. It is about the whole experience in the countryside, as these Transylvanian villages are probably Europe's last medieval landscapes basically unchanged for hundreds of years. So, if you decide to make this trip, do not ask where the church is. Take a walk, see the village, see the people and how they work, have a look inside their houses, learn about their customs.
The seven villages part of UNESCO patrimony are: Biertan, Câlnic, Dârjiu, Prejmer, Saschiz, Valea Viilor and Viscri. The tour will take you to all these villages and little bit more.
Itinerary:
Day 1:
Departure from Bucharest to Brașov, the city closest to the first village we are going to visit – Prejmer. Short stop at Peleș Castle, the castle of the Romanian royal family. Short city tour in Brașov and a visit to a local artist manufacturing wood objects using traditional models and colors. Lunch will be in Brașov. Visit of Prejmer, but also of the village of Hărman, near Brașov. Late accommodation in a guest house in the area, where you will also have dinner.
Day 2:
After breakfast, departure to Viscri, the village where Prince Charles owns a house. We will spend half a day here, visiting the church and having a walk in the area. After lunch, we continue our trip to see other villages in the area, as well as a short tour of the city of Sighișoara, where you will also visit the shop of the spoon man and his handicrafts. At the end of the day, you will arrive to Saschiz. Late dinner and accommodation in the area.
Day 3:
After breakfast, we visit Saschiz and spend some time walking in the area. After lunch, you will continue your trip to Dârjiu. Late dinner and accommodation in the area, at a guest house where you will spend the next day.
Day 4:
This is a day spent resting and experiencing the local food, as well as actually seeing how various local products are made. Breakfast, lunch and dinner at the guest house and walks in the area.
Day 5:
After breakfast, departure to Biertan. Visit of the village, accommodation in the area, lunch and short trips in the area and other villages nearby: Moșna, Richiș, Mălîncrav or Criț – the number of villages will depend on the pace you want to have. Dinner at the guest house.
Day 6:
After breakfast, we will visit the last village from the UNESCO list – Câlnic. On our way to Câlnic, we will have a short tour of the city of Sibiu, as well as a stop at the Museum of Icons on Glass. Depending on the weather, we may also visit a traditional shepard village, where we can also have lunch. Lunch on the way. Late dinner at the guest house.
Day 7:
After breakfast, we will start our trip back to Bucharest. It will be a 6 hour drive, with a stop for lunch. Arrival in Bucharest, at the airport or at your hotel.
