Canaima National Park lies on the Macizo de Guayana, one of the oldest
geological formations in the world. The Park covers 80.000 km2 and is
characterized by the fascinating “tepuys” (Pemon word for mountains)
and was included in the UNESCO World Natural Heritage List in 1994. The
park is covered by lush vegetation, including more than 500 orchid
species and a great variety of bromelias. It is inhabited by several
Indian communities of the Pemon family, including the Arekuna, Taurepan
and Karamakoto.
