Day 1: Izmir – Ephesus – Kusadasi (L, D)
Start your 3-day tour with a pickup from Izmir Adnan Menderes Airport or if you’re already in Izmir, from your central Izmir hotel. Settle into your air-conditioned minibus, and travel to Ephesus, the Mediterranean’s best-preserved ancient city.
After roughly an hour, arrive at this crumbled Greco-Roman city for a tour. See the spectacular Library of Celsus and Temple of Hadrian, and stroll the colonnaded Arcadian Way to the Great Theater, a 25,000-seater stadium where St Paul once preached. Gaze at the remnants of baths, shops and houses and hear about daily life here during Roman times.
After a break for a 2-course lunch, visit the nearby House of the Virgin Mary, where Mary is said to have spent her last days, and see the Temple of Artemis, once one of the Seven Wonders of the Ancient World. View the single, reconstructed pillar of the building as your guide describes its former magnitude.
Before your tour ends, stop at a Turkish handicrafts center and visit the village of Şirince. Stroll the cobbled lanes of this pretty place, known for its wine and crafts, and sample some local fruit wine. After, drive to the seaside resort of Kusadasi and check in to your hotel in time for dinner.
Overnight: 4-star Grand Onder, Marina or Ilayda Avantgarde hotel in Kusadasi
Day 2: Kusadasi – Pamukkale – Hierapolis (B, L, D)
Following breakfast, set off from your hotel by minibus to the UNESCO World Heritage site of Pamukkale. Stop on route at a leather center to see the displays of hand-sewn leather goods, and then, when you arrive at Pamukkale, marvel at the white travertine rock terraces that appear to flow down 656-foot (200-meter) cliffs.
Learn about the geology of the area, and walk to nearby Hierapolis to see its classical ruins. Enjoy time at leisure here and perhaps swim in the ancient thermal pool (own expense). Break for lunch, and then tour the relics, seeing the Roman necropolis; well-preserved Roman theater; and Martyrion of St. Philip. Later, return to Kusadasi and after dinner at your hotel, perhaps enjoy the resort’s souks and nightlife independently.
Overnight: 4-star Grand Onder, Marina or Ilayda Avantgarde hotel in Kusadasi
Day 3: Kusadasi (B)
Enjoy breakfast and time at leisure in Kusadasi this morning, maybe shopping for souvenirs or sightseeing on your own. In the afternoon, check out and enjoy a transfer to Izmir Airport or your central Izmir hotel.
