Day 1: Cusco to Aguas Calientes (No meals)
Depart your Cusco hotel at 6:00am and begin the scenic drive to Ollantaytambo. Enjoy the beautiful scenery of the area once you take a short 30-minute break. From there, continue down a long winding path to "Habra de Malaga", standing at an altitude of 4.316 meters. From that vantage point, see the one of the most amazing landscapes Peru has to offer. Afterwards, begin your descent into the jungle. Continue this route until you reach Alfamayo where you may rest once more. Head over to the small pueblo, Santa Teresa, where a delicious lunch will be awaiting you at approximately 12:30pm.
At around 1:45pm, you will return to the route in the direction of the train station at the nearby Hydroelectric Plant. Make a 2-3 hour hike along the rail tracks to Aguas Calientes. The option to take a train to Aguas Calientes as opposed to trekking is available as well. Once you arrive into Aguas Calientes you will be taken to the designated hostel or hotel. Enjoy a hearty dinner with the guide who will be taking you to the ancient citadel, Machu Picchu. They will go over the plan for the following day and answer any questions.
Overnight: Aguas Calientes
Day 2: Aguas Calientes to Cusco (No meals)
Choose to Machu Picchu by bus or by foot after a 5:00am breakfast. The guided tour of the site will begin at 6:00am and will last for at least 2 hours. Afterwards, you will be able to enjoy some free time until approximately 11:30am, when you will return down the mountain to the train station. The train back to the hydroelectric plant will be leaving Aguas Calientes at 12:35 pm. Upon your arrival to the hydroelectric plant, you will transfer over from the train to a private van. There, you will have a one hour break for one last chance to get some food or use the restroom before undertaking the final leg of the ride. Proceed back to Cusco for a 9:30pm arrival.
