Day 1: Broome -- Willare Roadhouse -- Geikie Gorge (L, D)
Your tour begins with an early morning departure from Broome as you travel east into the Kimberley gorges by 4WD. Listen to your guide's expert commentary on the history and geography of the countryside you're traveling through, and stop for morning tea at the Willare Roadhouse beside the Fitzroy River. Continue heading east, stopping to photograph a historic boab tree, before reaching the outback town of Fitzroy Crossing. As you cruise, admire the gorge’s ancient rock walls, dating back to the Devonian geological period and separating the Geikie and Oscar mountain ranges. Learn how the gorge floods during the wet season, and see where the floodwaters have left their mark on the cliff walls. Spot wildlife coming down to drink from the gorge, filled with water even in the dry season. In the late afternoon, enjoy a BBQ dinner around the campfire before turning in for the evening in your choice of accommodation.
Overnight: your choice of camping, safari cabin or motel accommodation at Geikie Gorge
Day 2: Geikie Gorge -- Tunnel Creek -- Winjana Gorge -- Broome (B, L)
After breakfast at your campsite, enjoy a trip by 4WD to Tunnel Creek. Explore the cave system of ancient Devonian reefs that runs for more than half a mile beneath the Napier Range, and discover secret caves on a guided walking tour. Take a refreshing swim in a picturesque waterhole, and hear legends from the past, including the tale of Jandamarra, a local Aborigine who led an insurrection against the settlers and hid out in the gorge in the 1890s. Continue to Windjana Gorge for a picnic lunch, and experience the tranquil beauty of this remote oasis. Keep an eye out for freshwater crocodiles and birds hiding in the Lennard River that runs through Windjana Gorge, where the limestone walls rise more than 300 feet (90 meters) and are home to fossils of shells and sea creatures. The trip back to Broome takes you back through Kimberley cattle country, stopping in Derby to see the Boab Prison Tree, more than 1,500 years old and more than 50 feet (15 meters) wide. Arrive back in Broome at around 6:30pm.
