Sand drifting from mainland Australia over the millennia formed into the mass now called Fraser Island. The local Aboriginal people named it K’Gari — paradise — and one can understand why after seeing the island’s sandy beaches, lush rainforest, giant sand dunes and numerous freshwater lakes.
Your Fraser Island hiking experience includes camping equipment such as a tent, hiking backpack and cooking gear, plus maps, itineraries, and a driver-guide who takes you from Hervey Bay to the starting point on Fraser Island for the self-guided hike. Your driver-guide shares a safety briefing and information about what to expect as you make your way to Fraser Island. All you need to bring is your personal gear and food for your trip, along with a moderate level of fitness and a sense of adventure.
Day 1: Hervey Bay to Fraser Island
After morning pickup in Hervey Bay, your experienced driver-guide transfers you by 4WD-vehicle onto the Fraser Island ferry. Upon arrival at the island, take in great views of the ocean and rainforest as you drive to the starting point for your hike at Central Station.
Before you set out on your own, your driver-guide provides you with detailed maps, camping equipment and information about sights along the trail. Then depart on foot from Central Station, where Fraser Island’s once-busy logging industry was based. Enjoy the shade of the rainforest canopy as you walk along Wanggoolba Creek and pass Basin Lake en route to Lake McKenzie. Expect to walk along a well-marked trail for a moderately challenging, 3-mile (6.5-km) hike to Lake McKenzie.
When you reach the lake, set up camp at the hiker’s campsite and savor the tranquility of the lake after the day visitors have departed. Perhaps take a dip in the pristine water, stretch out on the white-sand beach or watch the sun set and stars appear as you make your dinner.
