Bucharest - TRANSFAGARASAN road - SIBIU
When you get back home from your journey in Romania, you will have a unforgettable memory after visiting Transfagarasan.
Your tour begins in the morning leaving from Bucharest and within 2 ½ hours we shall arrive at Vidraru Lake and Dam, the 5th tallest dam in Europe and 9th in the World with a height of 166 meters. Good enough for even the bungee jumping fans.
Now the excitement starts! We might not drive you in one of Top Gear’s cars to feel the same adrenaline those guys had while making the tv show on Transfagarasan, but the sinuous road with endless U turns, deep ravines with breathtaking views, spectacular waterfalls and glacial lakes, and steep rocks will give you the feeling they're going to crumble over you.
We'll drive up to 2034 meters altitude, where we shall find Balea glacial lake and waterfall after going through the longest auto tunnel in Romania, 887 meters long.
Transfagarasan was built in the early 1970’s at a large human and financial costs, first as strategic military road and then opened for tourists.
In the late afternoon or evening we shall arrive in Sibiu, the 2007’s European Capital of Culture. With deep ties to Saxons dating back 800 years, Sibiu is the heart of Germanic Transylvania. We shall have a leisurely walk in the Large Square and Small Square, then Liars’ Bridge. For a spectacular panorama of the city and the surrounding mountains, we can go to Council Tower.
OVERNIGHT in SIBIU
2nd Day (B)
SIBIU - COZIA Monastery – Bucharest
Being very close to Sibiu, it is worth visiting Astra Ethnographic museum, where we can discover the “shelter for keeping the past” including over 300 old peasants households.
Heading back to Bucharest, we shall stop by Cozia Monastery, founded 1387, being the only Byzantine style building preserved in Romania.
