This tour departs from Taumarunui at 9:30am. You will take a shuttle from the base out to the RailCarts (a cleverly converted golf buggy). Your guide will give you a safety briefing and you’ll be on your way travelling in your own 2, 4 or 6 person RailCart. There is no steering required, simply press the pedal to go and the brake to stop.
Your guide will tell stories of the area, its people and its history. Prepare to marvel at the determination and hardship that was endured as the workers hand dug 10 tunnels, built 25 bridges and laid tracks through rugged terrain line nearly 100 years ago.
Morning tea and lunch will be served along the way. You will visit the Ohura Museum which is a proud piece of this mostly abandoned town, and provides a repository for much of the history of Ohura and the surrounding area. Some of the exhibits are rare agricultural items including tractors, machinery and many traditional implements providing a true accolade to the people who made this rural area so unique. You will travel through the longest tunnel on the line at 1.5km, continue travelling through stunning rural landscapes with views of steep hill country and native forest.
You will return back to the depot at 4:30pm.
